Why the Army Needs Events Like This

Sport & Adventure

Alongside the official film of the 2026 Cateran Yomp, we cut a short piece built around one interview recorded on the trail.

A soldier makes the case directly. The Army works hard to make soldiers more comfortable, and that is a good thing, but the reason anyone trains is that one day they will not be comfortable at all. They will be deployed somewhere unpleasant, doing difficult things without sleep, and that is the moment grit matters. Events like the Yomp are where people find out whether they have it.

His argument turns on a distinction that gave the whole project its spine. Asked about grit at mile seven, he points out it was a poor place to ask, because at mile seven everyone was comfortable and what sounded like grit was really just noise. Grit, as he puts it, is quiet. It is what is left forty miles later when the blisters have formed and popped and formed again, and there is nothing to do but put one foot in front of the other until the job is done.

Short films like this are often the most useful thing an event commission produces. They travel further on social media than a nine minute film, and because this one rests on a single clear argument it works for an audience who were never at the event at all.
